Faces of contemporary Goa

Labeled The Road to Salvador do Mundo, Sikka’s lens captures a very modern Goa that walks a road that is well hidden. Translated into simple English ‘Salvador do Mundo’ means the saviors of the world and this happens to the name of the small Goan village that grace Sikka’s canvas.

The name of the show is intriguing enough to get you up and about to the solo exhibition currently on display at Nature Morte. From the very moment you step inside the gallery Sikka instantly transports you into the labyrinth of the world that his camera captures.

Usually known for his high concept urban renditions, Sikka’s rendezvous with a world in the middle of nowhere is sure to leave you awestruck. From someone like Sikka one would, for better or worse, expect imagery that evokes more than what it suggests. If his cityscapes are testimony of his keen eye and nimble framing, The Road to Salvador do Mundo introduces faces and places that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Sikka very deftly places the people right in the heart of the setting. This amazing confluence of the people and the surroundings that they are, perhaps too well acquainted with walks a very fine line.

The imagery comes across as comfortably familiar and yet surprisingly new. The relationship between the two seems to be a recurring theme throughout the photos and speaks volumes to the viewer.

Sikka presents portraits, still life, interiors across moods and images are highly reflective. Never does the lush exotic landscape take prominence and the world that we see comes across a lost poem unearthed carefully.

Sikka’s vision is both simple and complex at the same time. This is best viewed in the two juxtaposed images–one has a man whose face is hidden by the unforgiving sunlight and the other’s lit by a cluster of light bulbs.

The images go from being highly lyrical (the woman in a burgundy dress straddled on a swing) to very surreal (the back of a little girl who holds a beat up toy) there is a story of these images speak a million words.

Voted as one of the most influential photographers by Flash Art whose works are common in the pages of Vogue, Sikka’s lets go of the highly sought after fashion photographer here to show a very personal side by represent a unique community in highly multifaceted manner.

The author has been writing content for sites, articles, reviews, events and blogs for the last few years and now working with Buzzintown, which covers events in Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi. Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, etc in India and interesting events & activities like music concerts, plays, food promotions events, etc happening in 19 cities of India.

Note: This paintings exhibition in New Delhi, “Road to Salvador do Mundo” is on display till the 28th of November at Gallery Nature Morte, A-1 Neeti Bagh, New Delhi.
