On my first trip to Ecuador, I discovered that the official currency is the U.S. dollar. A pleasant surprise since I thought it would have to find a place to exchange money at midnight in Quito. Not only can I use the dollar bills in my pocket, but only one of them would buy a three-course meal in a clean restaurant. Me immediately fell in love with Ecuador. I fell in love with my wife Ana a few days later.

Quito, Ecuador

I loved Quito, Ecuador's capital. Center of the world, the hostel where I stayed the first days, cost $ 4 per night, breakfast included. The walls had maps and all information I needed them. There were travelers from fourteen countries during my stay.

I took a tour to the Cotopaxi volcano, and rose to the glaciers with the other three, Israel, France and England. I danced (Free Rum in the hostel on Friday nights), wandered the streets of the city, and took Spanish classes in a beautiful tutor. Ana was not only a great teacher, but soon became my tour guide, and finally my wife.

Riobamba, Ecuador

Riobamba is another mountain town. My hotel was $ 3 per night, this time in a private room with a TV. The manager had connections, and information about what they wanted. He arranged for a guide to take me Chimborazo, which at 20,600 feet is the furthest point from the center of the Earth (due to the bulge in Ecuador). After climbing 4000 feet of glaciers, I made it to the summit.

Banos, Ecuador

Back in Quito, I called Ana, and made plans to go to Bathroom Agua Santa, a city in central Ecuador, famous for its hot springs. The bus was $ 3, a nice hotel with cable TV cost $ 7 per night. The second day there to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, went to the baths, bought souvenirs, went to see a movie, going to drink and dance – and all day, including a motel, cost $ 34!

More about Ecuador

The mountain towns (Quito, Riobamba, Loja, Cuenca, Otavalo, Ibarra, Ambato, Latacunga) have a wonderful climate. Highs in the year 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit all year. Guayaquil and the coast cities can be hot, but the temperature is moderated by the Humboldt Current, which brings cool water along the coast of America South.

If you like beaches, you have many options. In Salinas, for example, you can sit in a beautiful Pacific Ocean beach, while the bring suppliers of everything from beer to ice cream to the rental of a chair of music. For $ 20 you can rent a jet ski and have some fun in the waves.

The Galapagos Islands are part of Ecuador, and tour information is available in all major cities (it is cheaper to wait until you are in Ecuador to book a trip).

Good food can still be had for less than two dollars in most cities if you eat where the locals do. Hotels in most cities start at around $ 12 (less than one bed in a hostel). Cross country travel in the bus is cheaper and more convenient than bus travel in the U.S.

The people of Ecuador are almost universally friendly, and speak one of the clearest, easiest to understand dialects Spanish (A great place to learn). Ecuador is a safe, democratic republic with a legal system similar to U.S.
